Leading US Eco-Entrepreneur Visits Wales

15 March 2010

Paul Polizzotto in CardiffPaul Polizzotto is a leading ‘eco-entrepreneur’ in the USA. In February the SDC, together with the US Embassy in London and the Welsh Assembly Government, hosted a presentation by Paul on his work in Cardiff.

Paul began by explaining how he’d developed an interest in environmental matters from an early age as a young surfer in California. He’d gone on to found an industrial environmental cleaning company, pioneering a process called ‘zero discharge’ – a method of cleaning runoff water before it enters storm drains and thus protecting river and sea water. This led to him being called ‘an environmental hero’ by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Today he is CEO of Ecomedia, a company he founded in 2002. The firm uses money companies spend on advertising to produce media that raises public awareness about environmental issues and puts that money to work on climate change solutions.

This year EcoMedia, in partnership with the CBS Corporation, will complete green makovers of schools across the US. The company will also launch ‘Climate Action Media’, its "carbon offset advertising" product through which a portion of corporate advertising spends go to fund energy efficiency retrofits and on-site renewable energy in municipal buildings across America.

Paul’s work has been widely praised and in 2009, Paul and EcoMedia received the United States Conference of Mayors ‘Excellence in Public/Private Partnerships’ Award.

Paul took a number of questions from the audience, who were keen to ask questions on using innovative public private partnerships models such as this, to help Wales tackle climate change.
