Mainstreaming Sustainable Development

28 February 2011

Will Day responds to Government's announcement on its vision for mainstreaming sustainable development as SDC, together with key partners, hosts the Big Sustainability Summit which passes on its expertise developed over the last 10 years to the future SD leaders.

"We are disappointed in the lack of ambition shown by the Government in its goal to "mainstream" sustainable development. The proposals are vague and lack detail on how Government will make sustainable development the core of its policies and how government departments are run. Major reforms in education and health need a sustainable development approach to make sure that they deliver benefits now and for future generations.

It is very difficult for Government to claim greater transparency and accountability when it is not linked to independent challenge, advice or scrutiny. This statement does not follow up the Environmental Audit Committee's clear recommendations. It is surprising and disappointing that the five principles of sustainable development have not been made the central organising approach to developing and implementing policy. Bringing together a series of existing commitments in one place does not constitute a strategic and coherent approach to "mainstreaming" sustainable development."
