SDC welcomes National Strategy for Climate and Energy

15 July 2009

The Sustainable Development Commission has welcomed today’s announcement in Parliament by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Milliband MP outlining the Governments National Strategy for climate and energy.

Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission, Jonathon Porritt stated: "Today’s announcement is both timely and welcome. The Secretary of State is to be congratulated for his positive and proactive approach to this issue.

Incentivising investment in household energy efficiency measures, smart metering, and 'pay as you save' schemes should help to engender a keener understanding of the economic as well as the environmental advantages of this energy use shift. These are sensible and welcome policies.

We particularly welcome the requirement that Ofgem should play a much more proactive role in tackling climate change and ensuring security of supply.

The Sustainable Development Commission is also pleased to see that DECC will work closely with the Treasury in establishing a cross cutting review of energy efficiency in the public sector.

However, we would caution that industry in particular and society in general, need to see that Government not only sets targets for others but also practices what it preaches. Government must move with more urgency to tackle energy saving within its own estate and the public sector.

The Sustainable Development Commission also continues to hold reservations about the Government’s plans for nuclear power as part of this plan."
