Sustainable Development Commission Response to publication of PMSU Food Matters report

7 July 2008

The Sustainable Development Commission welcomes the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit's report on food, which reflects many issues of concern raised by the SDC in its report Green, Healthy and Fair (February 2008)

Tim Lang, SDC Commissioner for Land Use and Natural Resources, said:

"We are facing a mounting crisis in securing global food supplies, with climate change, rocketing oil prices and growing demand all placing a strain on traditional supply chains. On top of this, there is an urgent need to address growing national and international concerns about the societal, environmental and health impacts of food and farming, as reported by the SDC earlier this year.

"The PMSU's report Food Matters, then, is a timely and welcome attempt to tackle some of the questions which will affect us all in the near future. Business as usual is not an option, and we hope that this will mark the beginning of a concerted national effort, underpinned by strong leadership, to take us towards a sustainable food system."
