SDC joint report paves way to tackling carbon emissions from existing homes

28 October 2008

The UK Green Building Council with Sustainable Development Commission , Energy Efficient Partnership for Homes and the Technology Strategy Board has presented the Government with a report detailing requirements to reduce carbon emissions from existing homes.

"The Sustainable Development Commission has long championed cutting energy use in existing homes as one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Relatively easy measures can cut fuel poverty and upgrade existing communities. This report demonstrates the agreement across all sectors that we need to act urgently on the existing stock. It can no longer be a question of if and when, but how.

"The report makes it clear that existing homes offer a way of making immediate savings on carbon. It is also a very good way of generating local jobs, fostering new skills and improving local environments. We need the right policy framework, funding mechanisms and training. The government’s forthcoming low carbon homes strategy is hopefully set to address these issues next month." Anne Power
