Summary: | Existing buildings represent around 99% of the building stock at any one time, with new construction at a rate of less than 1% of the total stock per year. As the vast majority of housing to be occupied in the next 50 years already exists, improvements made within the existing stock will yield significant environmental savings immediately. In this paper we focus on the improvements that can be made in existing homes to reduce their impacts, relating to energy and climate change, water, materials and waste. |
