Summary: | The NHS has produced an NHS England Carbon Reduction Strategy, as part of a broader sustainable development agenda. To support this process, the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) has completed an updated carbon footprinting study - covering all NHS England Estates and activities - in conjunction with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). The footprinting report summarises NHS England carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the years 1992-2004 in three primary sectors - travel, building energy use and procurement - and their associated subsectors. Among the key findings listed in the report, we revealed that: • NHS England's carbon footprint rose by 12% from 1992 to 2004. • The NHS England footprint for 2004 represented 25% of the England's public sector carbon emissions. • Procurement formed 60% of the emissions for which NHS England is responsible We recommended that NHS England should: • Base its carbon reduction strategy on the SDC's findings, and work to develop an ambitious programme of action to cut emissions. • Set itself a challenging 2020 emissions target, and outline policy interventions which will have a real impact on emissions. • Focus on the procurement sub-sectors with the largest carbon impacts. • Strengthen future input data to carbon modelling work through mandatory capturing of energy usage data for buildings, and annual travel surveys. • Develop a carbon scenario modelling tool to identify measures that would deliver real and achievable carbon reductions. • Develop a carbon measurement tool to enable NHS Trusts and organisations to understand their own carbon footprint, and develop carbon management techniques to reduce their emissions. » Download NHS England Carbon Footprinting Report - Part 2 » Download NHS England Carbon Footprinting Report - Executive Summary |
